Rest in peace, and I'm sorry...

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 6, 2012, 5:06 PM
  • Mood: Sadness
  • Playing: Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • Drinking: Pepsi Throwback

...My precious albino pleco Vincent died yesterday...
I didn't do any research before I acted, and I put "No More Algae" in the tank because there was a TINY AMOUNT OF ALGAE.  ...Now I find out it's best to just manually remove the algae...   The "No More Algae" chemical f*cked up the PH really badly, and Vincent became VIOLENTLY ill in an insanely short amount of time.  By the time I noticed it, it was too late.  I changed the water, put in a PH stabilizer, and medication for his stress and sickness, but it was too late.

...I loved that fish.
I had him since he was a tiny little speck.
I'll be honest, I rarely actually cry about dead fish, but Vincent was special, and yesterday I was not doing so well about this.
But I cried my face off, and now I feel a bit better, but still...
...It was all my fault.

...I'm sorry Vincent...you were awesome...I will miss you, and for many reasons, I won't be able to replace you.

NO IT WASN'T YOUR FAULT AT ALL! D:<
I've heared many many people are having trouble with that product or anything with sodium bromide in them, they don't display proper warnings on the bottles and the instructions are unclear.
you only did what you tought was best for your fish friends, some algae can be dangerous for their health.

Really? Someone did tell me that one of the complaints on Amazon.com was "It killed all my fish -- the algae is fine". -_- I wish I had looked into it first...ugh.

I will NEVER use it again. I threw it out IMMEDIATELY.

good  it's not something that should be for sale for pet fish, it can be used on large fish ponds but it's disastrous on tanks x____x

so don't blame yourself ok? :)

): I know how you feel, I had a cat once...

When I was little me and my brothers would treat him badly (Not inhumanely but enough to drive him literally insane >_>)

I regret every possible way I and my brothers have treated that cat and now I'll never get him back -_-

Yeah, cats are fragile like that -- they never seem to get over that kind of treatment. And the guilt stays with you a long time...but remember, you were young. We all make mistakes when we are young, and we learn from them.

That being said though, I feel your pain about losing a pet...

Needless to say I don't have the same sympathy about fish though o: (Am I considered mentally unstable if I laughed when my fish died? O.o)

But pets are still loved ones (Apparently not fish in my case o_o) and I loved my cat Spike very much ): Sure I abused him but I was little and didn't know any better ;___;

So yeah, I understand -_-

I am feeling your pain too right now Nyaasu. I just found out that my betta fish Tryson passed away while I wasn't at home. I had him for two and a half years, that boy was everything to me. He was the only one I could have up north with me while I was away at school, I took him home and back so many times - and the one time I don't bring him back up north with me, he won't be there to greet me when I come home.

I'm such a mess right now and no one understands my pain. People just think they are fish, just pretty things to look at in a bowl but to people like me and you, they are so much more than that.

I hope you are doing well with the passing of Vincent, I send you the biggest internet hug right now because you are the only one that understands my pain and loss over our beloved fish.

I am so sorry to hear that... ;_; That's a sad ending to such a wonderful companion. You're right, though, people DON'T understand, they think that if you can't physically touch it that it isn't a companion animal, but sometimes you can strongly bond yourself to any kind of animal, even a fish.

I return your internet hug, and I hope you are feeling OK, also. :huggle:

I know how you feel... My cat, whom I loved dearly.. a best friend in my home... Lol, we were best of buddies. She'd been sick with diabetes for several years, and finally it began to take its toll on her. We finally got her on some good medication and special food and she started to make a comeback. The only issue was, she wasn't eating enough to keep strong. So my mom and i took turns diluting her wet food with water, putting it into a syringe, and feeding her by squirting it into her mouth.

one day she wasn't eating even that..
one day turned to two..
on the third day, I got too hasty and tried again to feed it to her, but in my panic, she inhaled it and it went into her lungs...

She got pneumonia from it, and that adding to her slow recovery from diabetes made it so she couldn't fight it...

I had to hold her as she was put down...

it was my fault, and I know it was... It's been 2 years and I'm still crying while typing this.

You have my understanding and my condolences. I'm truly sorry for what happened to Vincent. You're in my prayers. :(

Oh god...I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to you!! ...That is exactly how I feel though, like it's all my fault, and if it wasn't for ONE stupid, tiny thing I did, Vincent would still be here...

*Hugs you* I don't know what to tell you...people tell me not to blame myself, but it's hard not to... I'm sure you understand, and feel the same way.

But I guess, in both cases, we were trying to help our pets, so at least we had good intentions...and hopefully somehow, our pets understand that.

:huggle:
Thank you for sharing your story with me -- we all make mistakes, it seems. But I am also sorry to hear that it happened to you. :(

It is sad and yes, it is impossible to not blame yourself.

But what you have to do is accept that and keep going.

My dear feline, i believe, understood that my intentions were good. Out of my 3 family members there when she passed, she stared into my eyes until hers closed. Animals understand more than we think they do, and i'm sure even Vincent knew you didn't mean him any intentional hard.

The most we can do is accept what happened and cherish the good things in life that we did for them. And in the end, when you add up all the positives, they outweigh the negatives :)

I just wanted to share that story with you to let you know you're not alone and that someone really does understand how you feel. I hope you get to feeling better. I'm sure, that in the end, you provided Vincent with a very good and healthy, happy life. That is what matters :)

I think once you actually have a pet like that, you understand. People who only hear about it can't imagine how empty you feel once those kinds of pets disappear. They understand it with dogs, somehow, even if they haven't had one, but as soon as it's a fish, or a bug, or a crab or something unusual, they don't get it. I'm glad most of the friends I have on here understand.

I never even touched Vincent, until he died. But it didn't matter, he was still awesome, and without him, something is missing. But, I'm feeling better now, and looking ahead...I know what NOT to do in the future.

...By the way, I've never had a hermit crab, although I have been pinched by one (DAMN DID THAT HURT). What are they like, as pets?

I've never been close to a dog or a cat, and I can't stand it when people place more stock into the lives of "bigger" pets like that and make fun of people for being upset for a goldfish or a hamster or a crab. Just because it's not a dog DOES NOT make it less important, or mean it has any less of a right to life. In fact, I can probably pretty much guarantee that I would be closer to a bird or a crab than I would be to a dog or a cat, simply because I am more a fan of the small critters :) But that aside...

Hermit crabs are very easy pets! They are calm, quiet and easy to care for. The most noise you'll hear is them digging in the substrate or the occasional chirp or croak (they do that).

The biggest thing is making sure their tank is clean and providing them with a reliable water source -- usually a small shallow dish with water and a sponge for them is fine. They require water to keep their gills moist, but land hermits cannot be submerged or they will drown!

Food can be bought like any normal pet food, they look like pellets of fish food. Toys are nice to have around, they like to climb and dig, so having different things for them to crawl on and little spots to hide in is good. Also, make sure you leave them plenty of empty shells so that when they outgrow their current ones, they have a selection of new ones to choose from. I had one hermit crab who was a total prima donna and changed its shell constantly, it just couldn't decide :)

And also, hermies are social animals. It's best to have a few, as they enjoy being around each other. Fights rarely occur, and if they do it's usually over shells. But for the most part, they like being around the company of other hermies.

My hermies never bit me before, it's really all a matter of careful handling (don't stick your finger into their face or into their claws, etc.) and not frightening them. For the most part they are very gentle.

Oh, also... they molt. So don't freak out if you get some, and one day you see an empty husk of one lying around; the odds are the molting individual is hiding somewhere to protect his tender new skin :)

Oh I love small pets. I think they effect me just as emotionally as any cat or dog, so I would NEVER make fun of someone sad over ANY kind of pet. Honestly it doesn't even matter whether the pet was "intelligent", or social, or not -- if a person loves it, it will be devastating for them to lose that pet, end of story. A person mourning a pet of any kind is in the same kind of misery, regardless of species.

My rats love me more than my dog does anyway. xD

THEY CHIRP?! That's ADORABLE. I had a tree frog once who would sing at night -- I LOVED IT!

Also I have heard that they are social, which completely overturned anything I thought I knew about hermit crabs, ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY ARE CALLED HERMIT CRABS. So if I were ever to get one, it'd be the same deal as rats -- pairs only!

If you put in more shells, will it reduce the fighting? x3 Pets fighting is a serious fear of mine, since it's put more than one rat in the emergency room. Then again, crabbies might be more gentlemanly in their fights. Rats become vicious little demons when they fight.

Oh and in the case where I was bit, it was totally all my fault, I never blamed the little crablet. I was young...and I wanted to play with it, and I might have closed my hand on it too tight when I was going down the stairs...yeah. All my fault. Although, that never made me hate hermit crabs -- when I hear similar stories, kids tend to grow up hating the animal that hurt them (dogs, ferrets, etc), but I never held a grudge -- probably because even then I understood that it was my fault -- sir Crab was not out for my blood or anything. xD

LOL THANKS FOR THE WARNING! xD That would scare me so bad, I'd start crying and have a funeral, I know it. And then when Mr. Crab reappeared, I'd be scared of the ghost. D:

Yes, they chirp! It's... like a bird chirp, but mine didn't do it that often, sadly. I only heard it once or twice, but a few of my friends had some that were very vocal.

And yes, they are social, and thrive better when they have hermy friends :) Putting in extra shells does reduce fighting. In general mine hardly ever fought, and the only times they did was over shells. But having lots of shells is good, and they will have plenty to choose from; they love shopping ;)

As for crabby fights, yes, they do tend to be more gentlemanly, and it's usually a matter of one crab forcing another one out of its shell to take it. Then the loser will either sit naked and be sad, or move into the shell of the victor. But do keep an eye out; they tend never to get that violent in MY experience, but it's always best to be cautious.

I had one very bitty crab get forced out of his shell by another slightly larger one (go fig) and he just sat naked for a long time. I isolated him and put him into a small tank by himself with just a few other shells, and in a few minutes he'd re-shelled himself and was alright again.

And no, no ghosty crabs, dont' worry! Just a pink, tender, shy crab, and his look-alike husk ;)

"Then the loser will either sit naked and be sad..."
I pictured this, and it was hilarious. xD Also sad.

They sound AWESOME. I almost got one two summers ago, as a souvenir from someone who went to the shore, but I'm kinda glad I didn't, because at the time I didn't know they were social and liked buddies, so he'd have been a lonely crabber. But perhaps someday. x3
