Dogs can see in color

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 20, 2013, 8:42 PM

People tend to think that dogs see in black and white, but this is not true.
Dogs are "colorblind", but this doesn't mean they don't see in color.
It means they can only see a limited spectrum of colors.
The colors they have the hardest time seeing are reds and greens, like most colorblind humans.
Here's a visual comparison for ya: www.dogtagart.com/sites/defaul…

Why did I make this journal?
I was listening to a song from Disney's "Bolt", which implies that Bolt cannot see in color.

I just wanted to let everyone know that Bolt can totally see in color, and so can your dog.

I am tired and this journal is stupid.

 so can horses, goats, mice, rats, rabbits and cattle.
Cats can even see in color without light.

and chickens might be able to see more colors than us.

I didn't know cats could see color without light - or that chickens may be able to see more colors than we do! How many cones do they have in their eyes?

they have 5 types of cone cells
pretty impressive if you consider humans only have 3 xD

Mantis shrimp are even more imrpessive, they have 16 different types of cone cells :faint:

Haha, someone else told me about the Mantis Shrimp, and now it's like my favorite sea animal. :lmao: I caught one in Animal Crossing and kept it in my house. x3

I hate it when shows or movies give a "dog's eye view", and all you see is in greyscale :/

I'm pretty sure my dog can. He seems to "see" his peacock toys rather than his other dog toys. But I wonder how they do that. Find things...but I guess scent helps also with some things to relate things for them to know what they may be...

Is the peacock toy blue? Blue would be the color that stands out the most to him!

Yeah. Mostly blue, bits of green and yellow and orange. Also I think it helps that there is something in it the makes crunching sounds when it's thrown around. LOL

I know what you mean :3
Because of that the barriers of the agility sports are mostly blue and red because dogs can see when they have to jump then :3

I always known this and cats spectrum is pretty neat too, I have this small little animal book that I have had for nearly ages and it shows the dog spectrum in it. Love that book

Nice!

..I also just learned that the MANTIS SHRIMP has *15* cones in its eyes, and can see 12 colors we can never even imagine, and any combination of those colors.

...Holy crap.

Yea I knew about that shrimp they showed it on Discovery a year ago and they showed a representation of what it could look like and it was so trippy.

I recently learned that there is this lady that can see 21 more colors than a normal human can, I cannot imagine how that works either. xD

W...woah. xD How can she do that?

I've heard (just now) that if you take certain drugs, you can trick your brain into seeing colors outside of the regular human spectrum. I guess you don't need the cones so much as the electronic information to get to your brain...right?

I have no clue how she does lol

Yeah I think its the same way some people say they can taste colors or music, wasn't it Mozart that said he could feel music? I think it just depends on how the information gets to be inputted in the brain which is pretty immensely different from person to person.

Yeah, people can do weird things, like taste sounds. The brain's a tricky thing. If just one thing is off with it...it becomes a whole different animal. xD

Ooh~ I knew this already! :D I also heard that dogs see color best when it's twilight. Btw, this journal isn't stupid. ^^ Stuff like this is actually pretty interesting (at least to me) even if I already knew this. Are you sick by the way? Since you said you're tired and you're apparently eating pills. If so, I hope you get well soon! If not, then I hope you have a good day!

Well, that's one thing they can see better than humans then! I've heard we see worst at twilight, because our cones are kind of confused by the dim-but-not-dark lighting. xD

...Then again, I heard this from the same person who thinks that possums can hang from their tails in real life (not just in cartoons), so...well, I can't be sure. xD

And I'm not sick, I take pills every night for anxiety. xD Sometimes I write journals around the time I go to bed, so that's what I've just eaten. :lmao:

What do you mean it hasn't been proven...? They have two cones, which means they can see in greens and blues, and some yellows. I think they're pretty sure about that. xD

It reminds me of Cats and Dogs (the movie) The dogs were deactivating a bomb that the cats made and they needed to cut a red wire. Although the dogs said that they can't pin point the wire because they are color bling they showed it as black and white.

Also with the previous comments about Timmy as a dog.

I think Rugrats had it somewhat right when they were showing Spike's perspective on things (if I remember correctly) I think it is when he is searching for cynthia and it shows odd colors its better than the whole black and white deal.

Oh I've seen that movie, but I forget that scene. xD

Also, I VAGUELY remember that Rugrats episode. It's hard to interpret color the way dogs see them! I was going to try to re-do one of my artworks for an example of how it would look to a dog, but it didn't work the way I wanted it to. xD

Dogs only have two color receptive cones which are blue and green, so they can see those two colours and a tiny bit of yellow

Yes, that's a good way to describe it, too!

Imagine if we had just one more cone, how ridiculous the spectrum would be for us!
