...to me! ...I guess I got myself a rat. I didn't plan to. It just kind of happened. I came across her in a snake food bin at a local pet store, and while I pass those snake food bins probably hundreds of times, it's only been a few times that a rat has impressed me enough in such a short amount of time that I have to take them home, even if it means my boyfriend will kill me.
In this case, this rat was just too social, tame and trusting of humans by nature to be snake food. Don't get me wrong, I think all rats deserve a better fate than that* regardless of their nature, but it's not very often that rats are this social when they are treated as food instead of pets. I knew this rat would make a perfect pet for someone, even if it wasn't me, but in the end, it looks like she's going to be mine. She makes me so happy I almost cry. I have missed having a rat around so much. *I know snakes gotta eat and all that, I like snakes, too. But the rats that are intended to be fed live are the ones I feel the worst for - snake owners in my audience, always feed pre-killed/frozen-thawed, for the safety of your snake, and for the good of the rats/mice!
After deciding to buy her, I looked for a cagemate (rats are social animals and should never be alone!), but didn't have time to find the perfect one, so that search continues, but for now, she's with me almost all day every day, and I couldn't be happier. She is a silly little rat with an amazing personality, and way more social from day one than any other rat I've had.
Oh, but uh...as she was kind of a surprise...I had no name planned...so uh...suggestions? xD I mean, I want to keep the EarthBound/Mother theme going, but my boyfriend didn't seem too thrilled by "Paula". She's a hooded rat, meaning she is white with a colored (very light tan) head and stripe going down to her tail. Her eyes are also black with a very slight red tint. She's very pretty!
I didn't know about this little one, congrats! she has such a cute face
I know what you mean about rodents being used as reptile food >< it makes me sick. Specially when it comes to pinkies! they are fed to creatures who are not supposed to eat them, like tarantulas (it's actually VERY bad for them and they can die from it!)... it's nothing but sadism!
Yeah, and I found out that some people feed live animals to their pets because it turns them on sexually. ...And it's more common than I'd like to think. And that...sickens me.
And she does indeed! She is called Samus, or Sammie. x3
I kinda miss having rats... I used to have a COLONY of them. I'd built a massive cage that consumed two walls and part of the ceiling. At one point I had 23 rats running around in there (sometimes more when I was babysitting) and it was wonderful! Kinda stinky if I didn't clean the cages every couple of days, but it was adorable.
Holy crap, that's awesome! I've heard of massive set-ups like that, and I actually did see one in person at a rat breeder's house when I bought some rats from her. It seemed like a LOT of work, but it was cool to watch the rats just do their thing!
Although she apparently had to split up her colony, because they had assembled two "packs", which were constantly fighting with one another. @_@
I had a similar issue with a ringleader rat name "The Fat Bitch" (I had named her something else when I got her, but after 2 years of calling her the other thing... I just forgot her old name). Anyway, she'd whoop on new rats, hoard food, fight over whatever water bottle she was close to, and completely dominated one of the houses. I tried giving her a cage all to herself, but she'd get sick every time I isolated her from the pack.
v///v' I know how you've been feeling. When I got Matt as a baby guinea pig I just couldn't leave him because I thought they'd feed him to the snakes. x//D
she has such a beautiful and intelligent face...gotta love rats
